The Ministry of Education recently announced the results of the 2022 Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Awards (Science and Technology) for Higher Education Institutions. A total of 6 teams from 3 universities in Hong Kong, including The Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, won the First and Second Prizes of the Natural Science Award respectively. The Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre extends its congratulations to all winning teams.

CUHK Yu Jun's Team Wins First Prize

The research project of Professor Yu Jun, Professor of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Digestive Disease, and her team is titled "Research on the Composition Characteristics, Mechanism of Action, Early Diagnosis and Prevention and Treatment of Intestinal Microecology in Colorectal Cancer". As a globally renowned gastroenterology expert, Professor Yu Jun has won awards several times as early as 2010, 2012, and 2014. Professor Yu's winning research this time lasted for ten years, systematically studying intestinal microecology and colorectal cancer, making breakthroughs in the study of the correlation between intestinal microecology and colorectal cancer, confirming that intestinal microorganisms are the inducement and potential carcinogenic factors for the occurrence of colorectal cancer, helping the national and international medical communities to adjust prevention and treatment plans for colorectal cancer.

Secretary Sun Dong's CityU Team Also Wins Award

In addition, five other outstanding institutional research achievements won the Second Prize, including Professor Sun Dong, who was then Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong and is currently the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry. The project team led by Professor Sun Dong at that time began to systematically study how to apply robots and cell micromanipulation technology to implement precise cell delivery in vivo as early as ten years ago, and is one of the earliest research groups in the world to engage in this scientific research. Its winning project "Theory and Method of Precise Cell Delivery Based on Magnetically Controlled Microrobot Technology" revolves around cell delivery research by magnetically controlled robots in a micro-environment, microrobot magnetic control drive systems, and microrobot cluster control. Its results contribute to the development of tissue engineering technology for cell therapy in multiple fields such as cancer treatment, tissue regeneration, and organ injury repair. Professor Sun Dong had also previously led another team to win an award in 2019 with "Theory and Method of Cell Micro-Nano Manipulation Based on Robot Technology".

The Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award (Science and Technology) for Higher Education Institutions is a special science and technology award set up by the Ministry of Education. It is open to higher education institutions across the country and is awarded to individuals and units that have made outstanding contributions in scientific discovery, technological invention, promotion of scientific and technological progress, and implementation of patented technologies. Since 2009, this Center has been responsible for the contact, consultation, and recommendation work for this award, which is reported to the Ministry of Education by the Education Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. All projects have gone through strict award processes such as recommendation, expert review, and result publicity. Every year, many experts and scholars in Hong Kong receive this honor.
